Back to Black: 5 Ways to Add Bold Black to Your Home

“Welcome to the dark side” or shall we “Paint it Black”? Lame! I know! Black is big and who better to say so than AC/DC, Rolling Stones & Darth Vader!

When it comes to home décor, especially in the kitchen, most folk’s tend to opt for bright and light, and why not stick to the safe option? Its worked for decades, we only had so many options on the market when we wanted an appliance or a tap or a kitchen or a paint colour. Dinner plates only come in white right? No! There is a world of dark, sexy, sensual, moody interior inspiration out there and one of the hottest interior trends of the year has to be all things dark and moody.  Black is big. But it need not be modern, stark or minimalistic, black can be warm, inviting and fabulous and with kitchen trends moving towards the dark and mysterious its high up the trendometer right now!  It also doesn’t have to be scary, here we explore a few options for incorporating this massive trend into your home.

1 The Monochrome Palette

When embarking on a new colour adventure, its safest to stick to a limited number of colours – you can always add to the palette at a later stage – one of the key ways to play with black in the home is by using a monochrome palette (which is also on trend, so killing two trendy birds with one small stone!), here we explore a few options:

The Tuxedo Effect

A timeless and classic look in kitchens has to be all things black and white.  After all black and white go together like peaches and cream, cheese and wine, boerewors and All Gold! This super luxurious monochromatic look is a real showstopper and it brings in the all-important on trend black while balancing it off with bright white.

Black and Gold

Another show-stopping combo like diamonds and pearls, black and gold were meant to be!  Individually black and gold evoke feelings of luxury and elegance and create a strong statement.  Together they are another match made in interior heaven.  Combine the two to dramatic effect!  Whether you go for ultra-drama by doing a total overhall of your room or simply adding gold handles to black cupboard doors, black and gold are a winning combo. Black and Oak

Our third and final match made in interior heaven is black and oak (or black and a woodgrain, preferably a lighter one to offset the black and create some contrast).  It’s a great way to keep it natural and a little moody.

2 Paint it Black

Paint is a great and inexpensive way to experiment with new colours.  You can incorporate moody black into your home by painting a ceiling (giving a great cocooning effect, great in a bedroom), painting a staircase (creating some drama in your entrance hall), making a bold statement by painting the front door, painting a feature wall (to showcase a photo gallery) or painting a bookcase to showcase a wide range of beautiful books.

3 Large & Small Appliance

Large appliances just got cooler! AEG, LG Smeg & GE Appliances are all putting their awe in the black pond and putting their spin on the trend with super slick matt black and gorgeous black glass appliances.

Not ready to invest in the big stuff? Why not look out for small appliances from the likes of Smeg that come in bold black and will add impact into the kitchen.

4 Tap-tastic

Now you can also incorporate the trend by turning those taps black! Bring this cool industrial look into the kitchen or bathroom.
